CARBON NEGATIVE EVENTS

How do we make our events Carbon Negative?

Great question! This page aims to address that.

Process

First, we make a $10 option available to those who register as a voluntary contribution earmarked to help fund carbon removal as a result of the event.

Second, after each event, we use a well researched model from the University of Michigan to assess how much CO2 equivalent emissions took place as a result of the event. This includes a wide variety of factors such as event attendance, duration, AirMiners’ internal preparation meetings, energy from computer usage and network data transfer, and many more.

Third, we evaluate CO2 emissions removal options to draw the CO2 emitted out of the atmosphere.

Finally, we enter into a contract with the selected CO2 removal provider, who executes the removal on behalf of AirMiners.

Results

AirMiners is proud to show that we are carbon negative from our events, having drawn more carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere through our carbon removal providers (to date, Climeworks and CarbonCure) than we have emitted.

Here is an Excel spreadsheet summarizing the emissions data by event.

For an in-depth dive into AirMiners event carbon removal, see this 45 minute discussion our from our May 2020 Conference, led by Grant Faber.

Model is Published in International Journal of Env. Studies (2021)

The carbon negative events model for the AirMiners May 2020 conference became a project at the University of Michigan Global CO2 Initiative that is now published in the International Journal of Environmental Studies.
